Yamaha Blaster Compression Test: Instructions and PSI Guide

A Yamaha Blaster compression test is one of the quickest ways to check the condition of the piston, rings, and cylinder. Low compression can make a Blaster difficult or impossible to start and may cause poor power, excessive noise, or unreliable operation.

This guide explains how to properly test Yamaha Blaster compression, interpret the PSI reading, and decide whether the engine needs further inspection.

What Does a Compression Test Check?

A compression test measures the pressure produced inside the cylinder as the piston moves upward with the exhaust and transfer ports closed.

The test helps evaluate the condition of the:

  • Piston rings
  • Piston
  • Cylinder bore
  • Cylinder head gasket
  • Spark plug threads and sealing surface

A compression test does not check crankshaft seals, intake leaks, crankcase gaskets, or other possible air leaks. Those areas must be checked with a separate two-stroke leak-down test.

Yamaha Blaster Compression PSI

A fresh, properly assembled stock Yamaha Blaster engine will commonly produce approximately 125 PSI when tested correctly.

Use these readings as a general guide:

Tools Needed

You will need:

  • A quality screw-in compression tester
  • Correct spark-plug-hole adapter
  • Spark plug wrench
  • Clean shop rag
  • A way to safely disable the ignition

Avoid compression testers with excessively long hoses or adapters. The extra internal volume can produce a lower reading on a small two-stroke engine.

How to Perform a Yamaha Blaster Compression Test

1. Warm the Engine

If the engine runs safely, warm it to normal operating temperature and then shut it off.

A warm test usually provides the most useful reading because the piston, rings, and cylinder are closer to their normal operating clearances.

If the Blaster will not start, the test can still be performed cold. Record that it was a cold test when comparing the results later.

2. Shut Off the Fuel

Turn the fuel petcock to the OFF position.

3. Disable the Ignition

Make sure the engine cannot start during the test. Keep the spark plug wire away from the spark plug hole.

4. Remove the Spark Plug

Clean loose dirt away from the spark plug before removing it. This prevents debris from falling into the cylinder.

Inspect the plug for fouling, damage, or unusual color while it is removed.

5. Install the Compression Tester

Thread the compression tester into the spark plug hole by hand.

Do not cross-thread the aluminum cylinder head, and do not overtighten the tester. The tester only needs to seal against the spark plug seat.

6. Hold the Throttle Fully Open

Hold the throttle wide open while performing the test. A closed throttle can restrict airflow and produce an inaccurate reading.

Make sure the choke is off.

7. Kick the Engine Over

Kick the engine through firmly and consistently until the gauge stops increasing. This normally takes several full kicks.

Do not record the first kick. The final reading after the gauge stops climbing is the compression-test result.

8. Record the Reading

Write down:

  • Compression PSI
  • Engine temperature
  • Gauge used
  • Approximate elevation
  • Number of kicks
  • Any engine modifications

Recording these details makes future tests much more valuable.

What Causes Low Compression on a Yamaha Blaster?

Low compression can be caused by:

  • Worn piston rings
  • Excessive piston-to-cylinder clearance
  • Worn or damaged cylinder bore
  • Scored piston or cylinder
  • Broken or stuck piston ring
  • Incorrect piston size
  • Damaged cylinder-head gasket
  • Loose cylinder-head nuts
  • Warped cylinder head
  • Improperly assembled top end
  • Excessive exhaust-port height

If compression has dropped significantly from an earlier test performed with the same gauge, the top end should be inspected before continued operation causes additional damage.

Can You Add Oil to Check the Rings?

A small amount of two-stroke oil can sometimes be placed through the spark plug hole before repeating the test. If the compression rises noticeably, the oil may be temporarily helping the rings seal.

However, this is not a final diagnosis. Oil added to a two-stroke cylinder can temporarily increase the reading even when other problems are present. The cylinder, piston, and rings must be physically inspected to determine their actual condition.

Modified Yamaha Blaster Engines

Porting, cylinder decking, head rechambering, bore size, gasket thickness, and piston deck height can all affect compression.

A modified engine should not be judged only by stock PSI numbers. Compare the reading with the engine builder’s intended specification and with previous readings taken using the same gauge.

More compression is not always better. Excessive cylinder pressure can increase the risk of detonation and may require higher-octane fuel.

When Should You Test Compression?

Perform a compression test when:

  • The engine is difficult to start
  • Power has decreased
  • The engine will not idle properly
  • The top end has become noisy
  • The spark plug repeatedly fouls
  • You purchase a used Yamaha Blaster
  • You establish a baseline after rebuilding the engine
  • You suspect piston, ring, or cylinder damage

A baseline test on a healthy engine gives you a valuable number for comparison as the engine accumulates operating hours.
