Motorcycle and ATV Flywheel Lightening Service

Improve throttle response and acceleration with professional flywheel lightening from Ken OConnor Racing. We precision-machine motorcycle and ATV flywheels in-house to reduce rotating mass while maintaining proper mounting accuracy and the flywheel’s original balance.

Precision-machined racing engine component for high-performance motorsports.

Benefits of Flywheel Lightening

A lighter flywheel allows the engine to change RPM more quickly. Reducing rotating mass can provide sharper throttle response, faster acceleration and quicker access to the engine’s powerband. This modification is particularly beneficial for racing and performance applications where rapid engine response is important.

  • Quicker throttle response
  • Faster engine acceleration
  • More rapid RPM changes
  • Quicker access to the powerband
  • Improved response for racing applications
  • Precision machining performed in-house

Our Flywheel Machining Process

Proper flywheel lightening requires accurate fixturing and controlled machining. We remove the magnets before machining whenever the flywheel design requires it. Vibration eliminators are used during the machining process to help maintain accuracy.

Each flywheel is mounted using a fixture that duplicates the original crankshaft taper. The mounting fixture is indicated to within .0001 inch before machining begins. This allows material to be removed accurately without altering the flywheel’s original balance relationship.

Is a Lightened Flywheel Right for Your Engine?

Flywheel lightening is most beneficial when faster engine response is more important than maximum stored rotational energy. It is commonly used in motocross, ATV racing, drag racing and other performance applications.

The amount of material that can be safely removed depends on the flywheel’s construction, application and intended use. Contact Ken OConnor Racing before shipping your flywheel so we can confirm that it is suitable for this service.

Flywheel Lightening Frequently Asked Questions

What does lightening a flywheel do?

Lightening reduces rotating mass, allowing the engine to gain and lose RPM more quickly. This can improve throttle response and acceleration in performance applications.

Does flywheel lightening add horsepower?

Flywheel lightening does not directly create horsepower. It reduces rotational inertia, which can allow the engine to accelerate through the RPM range more quickly.

Will flywheel lightening affect engine balance?

Ken OConnor Racing machines the flywheel from a fixture that duplicates its original crankshaft taper. The fixture is indicated to within .0001 inch before machining so the original balance relationship is maintained.

Can every motorcycle or ATV flywheel be lightened?

No. The amount that can be removed—and whether lightening is appropriate—depends on the flywheel design and intended use. Contact us before sending your flywheel.

Is a lightened flywheel suitable for trail riding?

It depends on the engine and riding conditions. A lighter flywheel improves RPM response, but reducing flywheel inertia can also make an engine easier to stall at very low speeds. We can help determine whether the modification fits your application.
